I’ve enjoyed sharing my favorite books with you, but this week I want to focus on one thing that’s been on my heart.
Here’s the thing. . .
You already have all that you need to parent your child.
I understand that there are exceptions. But let’s look at what many of us do have:
The ability to smile and speak a kind and gentle word to your babies first thing in the morning and as often as we can.
Arms to hold them when all they want is a hug.
Feet to go on a walk with them or take them to the park.
Eyes to find beauty and magic in the leaves, the clouds, the moon, and the stars.
Hands to squeeze their fingers in affirmation or hold them in protection.
Friends and family who want to help.
Advocates who speak up for us and encourage us.
The resources available to us through our communities.
Easy recipes. Drive thrus when even those recipes seem too much.
Blankets to cover our children in colder nights.
Books to read to them, and libraries where we can borrow books for free.
Teachers who still believe in us, and in our ability to teach our kids.
The ability to choose kindness.
The ability to choose consistency.
The ability to jump into a big pile of leaves when doing anything else seems overwhelming.
A ball.
Coloring books. Or just paper and pencil, crayon, marker, or pen.
Tears. When they’re called for. When they’re not.
The power to start over. Again.
The power to plan.
Psalms. Proverbs. Daniel. The rest of the Bible.
The radio. Beautiful songs.
The power to say “No, this is too much right now!” Or just “No.”
Listening ears to walk and listen, sit and listen, or hug and listen.
The ability to say “Yes!”
Knees to fall on in humility and prayer.
A good God who loves us and asks us to trust Him especially when things look bleak.
Lips to praise God for everything in our lives.
Laughter at funny memories and ridiculous comments.
The sunrise.
The sunset.
Stamina, tenacity, and
Grace.
We have all we need.
