I know most of us have spent the last week and a half praying, checking in on friends, praying some more, and supporting charities like the Red Cross. If you’d like to support the families affected at two really great schools, you can!
Click to support Yes Prep and KIPP please!
The first link is an Amazon gift list so you’ll be buying specific, tangible things that will go straight to the families affected. The second link is to support KIPP families and staff. KIPP has given so much to Houston. I know we can give back to them and support their staff and students.
I have talked to some of you and the main thing I want to say is thank God you are okay. I know you may feel devastated and traumatized. I am so sorry you are going through this. I know people all over the world are hurting for you and praying for you. You are so strong, but that doesn’t take away the pain. Given how much water fell on Houston in such a short time, I am so glad you are alive.
Like the rest of the world, I am awed by countless selfless acts: using your bass boats to save people, opening your doors to people who need shelter, giving money to others even as you yourself are suffering, literally carrying your neighbors to safety, rescuing and taking care of animals, volunteering your time, and so much more. I want to be like you, my heroes.
I think of Matthew 25:34-36 here. Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ‘For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’
Thank you, Houston, for reminding the world how we are supposed to treat each other and inspiring us to emulate you. We are so sorry you are hurting. We will not forget you. We will continue to check in, to give as we are able, and to pray for you.
