today, I had an opportunity to watch an intense (not for kids) movie that was really, really good. It was a movie about repentance and God’s mercy, a modern take on Moses the Black, a saint from the fourth century who lived in Egypt. At first, he lived a violent life as a gang member, but then, he hid at a monastery and was so moved by the monks, that he converted to a life of peace, humility, mercy, and non-violence. He was beloved, an inspiration to many.
In the movie, we follow a gang member in Chicago who repents. It was indeed violent, but I get that it had to be to show what life is like. Whole was the conversion of the man, and he died having repented. After the movie was over, my friend and I just sat there, moved by the moment and not ready to walk away yet. Again, not for kids, but very, very good for adults. Reminding us that no one is too far gone to repent. That God’s mercy is available to us right now, in this very moment, and that we are to extend mercy to others.
God, help me choose the way of nonviolence. Give me wisdom, oh God, my God. Help me overcome my temptations so that I may be a productive member of society, rejoicing in God’s mercy. Help me be holy as you are holy. It’s never too late to become a saint.
