Our sweet dream deferred
Washed up on a kind Island
And Grew into Love
Thank you to Japan for giving the waiting world the gift of the Olympics! The kids and I watched as athletes conquered (Athing Mu), came back so strong after losses (Katie Ledecky, Michael Norman), finished their careers on beautiful summits (Allyson Felix), and gave the world permission to take care of ourselves and return majestically (Simone Biles).
I can’t count the times my daughter said, “Mom, are you crying again?” because there were so many moving moments and it was natural to be happy for these athletes, and not only Americans but people all over the world who somehow found it within themselves to train and compete during a pandemic (Norwegian hurdler! Aussie swimmers! Jamaican runners! ROC’s synchronized spiders!).
Since countries spend so much money on Olympics and typically make money in ticket sales, Japan basically sacrificed itself to let the world come together and do something amazing. Thank you for giving the world this gift, Japan! You brought happiness to so many families this summer.
Kids, thanks for watching with me! I really enjoyed our time together and I hope you were as inspired by it all as I was.
And now it’s our turn to carry the lessons from the Olympics into our lives and celebrate our amazing teams! Sometimes getting out of our beds is an achievement and sometimes we are inspired to truly dream about what’s possible. Get ready, get set, go enjoy your day!
P.S. If you want to experience pure happiness watch the video of the women’s 4x400m relay!
And this one of the men’s relay!
